New revision of CREATIONS for 12 or 16 voices

John Oliver has revised his seminal 1988 work for two 8-voice antiphonal choirs (16 voices). He has created two new versions: 1] the original work for 16 voices, and 2] a slightly reduced version for 12 voices.

CREATIONS is a choral composition about the creation myths of the world.

The story behind COOL CUT

John Oliver’s new work Cool Cut is inspired by key compositions from the "cool jazz" period, specifically the landmark Miles Davis nonette recording BIRTH OF THE COOL (1954).

Come hear it performed by Julia Nolan and the Turning Point Ensemble.

Oliver Tossing and Turning for solo violin on new CD release

In 2005, violinist and composer Piotr Szewczyk developed the Violin Futura Project, a collection of commissioned miniatures for solo violin that highlights over thirty international contemporary composers and how they are re-imagining the solo violin. “The purpose of the Violin Futura Project,” says Szewczyk, “is to sample the creative environment of our times by showcasing the wide variety of styles present in the 21st century, and to create a body of new solo violin repertoire.” Navona Records presents the album release of Szewczyk’s project, VIOLIN FUTURA.

Oliver part of 5 Vancouver-Shanghai composer exchange

John Oliver is off to Shanghai to hear a performance of his Purple Lotus Bud for Chinese zither (guzheng) and string quartet as part of a cultural exchange between Vancouver and the Shanghai Conservatory. The Performance will take place at 7:30 pm on November 30 at the He Luting Concert Hall, Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

John Oliver alto saxophone concerto - support it at Indiegogo

Today we launch the Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to support John Oliver in the composition of his new saxophone concerto for Vancouver saxophonist Julian Nolan. The Turning Point Ensemble will present the premiere performance on April 29, 2016 with a repeat performance the next evening. Help Julia and John make this happen!
